It seems that paintball games have been around forever.  While in actuality it is a relatively new sport.  It all began in the forests of the United States. Oriniginally people were not stalking each other.  The original paintballers marked trees instead of people.

            The original markers then fired a paintball that was filled with a permanent paint.  Each tree that was marked was destined for the sawmill.  Then it finally dawned on a couple of chaps that it might be a fun thing to go hunting for each other.  Maybe they were war veterans who wanted to relive the thrill of combat again, who knows.  All that is known is that in the early 1980s the first game was played.  They went into the woods and hunted each other.  Remember that the balls contained permanent paint so when they hit, the paint stayed and there was no way to get it out of your clothes.

Not much fun for the clothes washers but great for the surplus stores as people rushed to replace their old clothing.  It got to the point that no one knew if they were hit or not; too many paint spots.  Fortunately the manufacturers of paintballs (of which Nelson was one of the originals) started filling their paintballs with paint that was washable and faded as it dried.

Markers went through many changes over the years.  It all started with the trusty 10 shot pump that was fueled by 12-gram CO2 cartridges.  Soon, larger tanks were added to give the player more firing before they had to change tanks.  Hoppers that contained up to 200 balls were added to the guns.  Today the norm is a semiautomatic paintball gun as opposed to a pump.  My, how things have changed.

            Speedball was developed.  A lot of fast, clean fun!  The rush can be intense but the burn short.  Speedball is played in the open with players running from bunker to bunker; fun but not very realistic.
